What is a solo RPG?
A solo RPG is a way to explore a setting or system without needing other people to be there. One way to think about solo RPGs is that you are both the player and the GM. Sometimes, they are super light and are closer to a writing prompt. Other times they are super crunchy and there are a lot of moving parts you need to be away of. All in all solo RPGs are basically whatever you want them to be.
Starter Game Suggestions
There are numerous different types of solo RPGs. Here are a few that I would recommend a new solo RPGer start with.
Be Like a Crow
Ironsworn
The Thousand Year Old Vampire
Star Trek, Captain’s Log
Each of these are fairly different but each would be a great place to start in solo RPGing. Personally, I started with The Thousand Year Old Vampire, but it didn’t really click for me until I played Ironsworn.
How to Start
Really to start all you need is some paper and something to write with and cards or dice depending on the system you use. You don’t really need more more than that. Another way to put it is, select your favorite medium for storytelling whether it is pen and paper or on a device. Then select your favorite way to get random numbers. That is all you need. There are a ton of great free games online.
